Sunset
Country Club boasts one of the more storied and best maintained
private championship golf courses in the St. Louis area.
The par 72 layout affords 6,640-yards of breathtaking vistas
tree lined hills and slopes, challenging but true greens
and devilish greenside bunkers.
Renowned Scottish-born designer Robert
Foulis developed the course originally in the early 1900s.
In 1989, Dr. Michael Hurdzan, the 1998 Golf Digest Architect
of the Year, was retained to rejuvenate and update the layout;
Hurdzan and his organization continue to work closely with
the club and noted superintendent Tom VanDeWalle to ensure
the ongoing excellence of the facility.
Sunset has hosted some of the world's
most legendary players and many important events. Gene
Sarazen, Sam Snead, Dow Finsterwald and Tom Kite have
all graced Sunset at one time or another. In 1946, the
club was the site of the Western Open Golf Championship;
the immortal Ben Hogan won the title. The
Western Open was considered then the fifth major. In 2001
the club hosted the prestigious Missouri State Amateur Championship
and in 2003 a U.S. Senior Open qualifying event was held
at Sunset. Sunset maintains a full service pro shop
staffed by PGA professionals, as well as excellent practice
facilities - driving range and chipping and putting greens.
Tee times are never required at Sunset. |
